Halima is an 86 years old grandma who lost her home and most of her belongings in the current flooding in Garissa County, Kenya. When we found her, she had spent the previous night sleeping out in the cold under a tree, in heavy rain.
Record rains have caused extreme flooding in the mainly Somali area of the northeastern province, causing major destruction and displacing hundreds of families. Many houses have been submerged or totally destroyed, leaving countless vulnerable people, like Halima, completely destitute.
As residents eagerly await for aid agencies to arrive, Happy Hearts has had the privilege of being one of the first on the ground, brining plastic shelter coverings, mosquito nets and food to those like Halima, who have lost everything and lack even the most basic necessities to survive.
